A;R: The Fable Series// Development of ideas and testing- Part 1

Over the last couple of days, I’ve gotten around to tasking apart different lines or quotes from games 1, 2 and 3. I started to create collages on specific ones that stood out, either in how clear and vivid they were, or in how they helped to sum up an important aspect of Fable’s world.

“I awoke from the nightmare again. One would think more than two hundred years would suffice to blunt it’s steel. But still I see Oakvale devoured by shadows. Still those shrieks fill the air. How much longer must I live before they fall silent?” – Reaver’s diary.

He’s talking about the massive bandit raid, which happened in the first game.

I created this one out of textured paper, I felt that as a starting point it would be good to start collaging the ideas out of just solid colours of pieces of paper and go from there. With this piece in particular, the word ‘watch; seem to stand out to me, and when I think about Reavers reference to Oak vale it led me to believe that he was talking about the same Oakvale flames that was in the first game. From this stance, it could be that he is watching the village burn up in flames, or even the hero that you play as in the first game. burn.jpg

This outcome was a bit too simple, and I couldn’t figure out where to start, so I decided to focus on a couple more quotes to get me going. I tried to select quotes that could be used more as an introduction to the games, as that’s my main focus– to introduce the series to a new audience.
I also starting to think how I could portray these quotes in a not so direct way as first… metaphorically? not sure, but there were words that stood out to me, which helped to build up a visual image.

circus full of screams
The quote for this described the scene to be a ‘circus full of screams’, even with the screams, it felt so out of place, considering a circus is used for entertainment and joy, but as the screams were more to do with the fear from the villagers, it really felt quite contradicting.

“I awoke from the nightmare again. One would think more than two hundred years would suffice to blunt it’s steel. But still I see Oakvale devoured by shadows. Still those shrieks filled the air. How much must I live before they fall silent?”
Here, I focused mainly on ‘Devoured by shadows’; it stood out to me quite boldly and I tried to take this collage in to a more literal translation, by making the forest appear as if it’s being eaten by the shadows.
There’s teeth there, too, but as I proceeded, I found that by doing these translations in not such a direct way, I felt it drifting away from the focus and if I were to consider this from a viewpoint of a complete stranger, who had never played this game, they would be confused. If I kept the imagery straightforward and direct, it may help.

“Then I see him running madly through fields, the realisation of just what price he has unwittingly paid hanging like a tragedy mask from his face.”
Attempted again, to try an collage some found images with some cut-outs and it still wasn’t working, I may try some more and see where it gets me, and then try to digitally collage two or three of the images together to form a new image.
